Devastated family of woman, 38, cleared of ‘sacrificing’ her daughter

Devastated family of ‘devil’ sister, 38, cleared of ‘sacrificing’ her four-year-old daughter by reason of insanity say she should be jailed

  • Carly Ann Harris killed her daughter Brooke by drowning and burning her
  • Her sister Tiffany Wright, 30, have spoken out for the first time since tragic death
  • The family were the first people to discover Amelia’s dead body in the garden

The distraught family of a four-year-old who was drowned and burned by her own mother have spoken out for the first time to demand justice.

Carly Ann Harris, 38, killed her daughter Amelia Brooke Harris in a ‘sacrifice’ at their home in South Wales in June this year.

Sister Tiffany Wright, 30, and her husband, Mathew, 31, have demanded justice for their beloved niece after Harris was found not guilty by reason of insanity at Newport Crown Court in December.

Revealing the horrific details of the day Ameila died, Tiffany says she was first on the scene after her sister Harris killed her only daughter at their family home in Tonypandy, South Wales, in June.

Harris, a mother-of-three and part time saleswoman, drowned Amelia before setting her alight – which Tiffany claims was while Amelia was still partially alive – for her family to find.

She claims her family were angered by the insanity verdict given to her sister and has begun a campaign dubbed #JusticeForAmelia to protest the decision.

Mother-of-three Tiffany, from Tonypandy, South Wales, told the Daily Star Sunday: ‘She should be serving a life sentence in prison – every day we suffer this, and we are livid.

‘Carly’s actions were so evil they were devil-like – it was pure evil.’

Husband Matthew added: ‘Her daughter is lying six feet under in a cold box, while she’s being treated softly in a warm room, having takeaways.’

Reports have suggested that Carly suffered from mental health issues which began as a teenager after attending drug-fueled parties – it was also claimed that she took amphetamines regularly.

Mother-of-three Tiffany, from Tonypandy, South Wales, said: ‘I want justice for my niece, who was wise beyond her years.

‘I was extremely close to Amelia. She was the most loving little girl and was almost like a surrogate child.

‘She was such a special kid, who loved dancing, glitter and make-up. I had so much fun with her.

Recalling the day she discovered Harris had killed her niece, she said:  ‘I will never forget receiving that phone call. It was about 10pm in the evening and Carly rang.

‘She told me, ‘I’ve killed Amelia’.

The court heard that neighbour Megan Griffiths saw Harris standing in the front garden over Amelia (pictured), looking ‘dazed’

‘I’ve spoken to my sister since, and every time I think about that night, my stomach flips and I feel sick.’

Amelia’s teenage brother Levi, 17, found her body, wrapped in a sheet, on a table in their garden.

Neighbours heard screaming and went into the street to see what was wrong, before finding Harris’s older children, who were visibly distressed.

The court heard that neighbour Megan Griffiths saw Harris standing in the front garden, looking ‘dazed’, and told her: ‘God will be with her. The angels have taken her.’

The neighbour dialled 999 and went into the back garden of Harris’s house where she saw Amelia’s charred remains lying on the coffee table covered with a sheet.

In July, Tiffany received a letter from her sister, who is incarcerated at Cygnet Hospital, Stevenage indefinitely, to apologise for her actions.

But despite Carly’s diagnosis of schizophrenia, Tiffany believes there could have been more to her sister’s actions, claiming, ‘she was anxious’ just before she murdered Amelia.

‘She was talking really fast and it was clear she had a nervous disposition.

‘I still firmly believe my sister is a good actress.’

The aunt is raising funds for a barrister to reopen the case as she hopes Carly can then be tried for murder and to help her two nephews come to terms with what has happened.

She said: ‘Carly said she wishes she’d given Amelia to me.

‘I think she knew what she was going to do.

‘I pleaded with her and asked ‘please tell me you’ve not done anything to that baby?’

‘I was hoping she was just unwell, but then she said she’d her, and burnt her.

‘I think she knew she was going to do it that night as she left my house.’

Using the hashtag #JusticeforAmelia Tiffany, and her partner Mathew, a carer, have plans to organise multiple protests and have set up a petition which has already got over 4,000 signatures.

She said Carly’s sons also need support after the horrific incident.

She added: ‘The boys used to be so outgoing but now they’re withdrawn.

‘They lost everything that night and I want to be able to give them something back, to love and to spoil them.

‘We’re determined to get justice for Amelia – we need to get her story out there. We think Carly should be in jail.

‘I never thought she’d be capable of this, and she should have received a life sentence.

‘Amelia was just a month shy of her fifth birthday, a beautiful loving girl, filled with so much empathy. She was so full of love and care.

‘Other family members might believe Carly, but it’s easier for them forgive than to accept what’s happened.’
