Jon Favreau Talks About Disney Plus' Star Wars Series, 'The Mandalorian'

Star Wars fans have the prequel trilogy. They have the sequel trilogy. There’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels — but what happens in between the Empire and the First Order? The Lion King director Jon Favreau answers a few questions with his television show, The Mandalorian, premiering on Disney Plus. Here’s what we know about the cast and release date for this series.

Jon Favreau is working on the new Star Wars series, ‘The Mandalorian’

If you love Boba Fett and Jango Fett, you’re in luck. Disney is producing a television series for its streaming service, Disney Plus. This series, called The Mandalorian, details the story of a warrior following the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This “lone gunfighter” is in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the new Republic.

According to Collider, season 2 for this television series is already in the works. In an interview, creator Jon Favreau stated that he was already writing the second season. This upcoming season is already in the pre-production phase.

“I keep getting pulled deeper into the orbit of Disney, but fortunately the stuff that Disney’s working on is the stuff that I love,” Favreau said. “I wanted to do a Star Wars TV show like The Mandalorian and pitched it to them and they were very open to it. I even wrote four episodes before I even was hired to do it because I was excited as a fan to see what these stories might be and see if they were interested in doing what I was interested in, which they were. And I was actually writing Season 2 this morning before I came here.”

What characters are in Disney Plus’ ‘The Mandalorian’?

Disney has not released an official cast list yet. However, the company announced the actor who will portray the title character, the Mandalorian. Pedro Pascal, known for his roles as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones and Javier Peña in Netflix’s Narcos, will star in this series.

According to Variety, “Disney recently announced that Dave Filoni, who has worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, will direct the first episode of the series. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones) will direct additional episodes.”

Will ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ be available on Disney Plus?

Disney’s streaming service gives fans a handful of original movies and television shows, but that comes with a price. Presumably, Disney-owned content currently available for binging on Netflix will be removed. That includes Star Wars-related films, like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

However, for Disney Plus subscribers, new Star Wars television shows and movies will be available for streaming. Movies released in 2019, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will most likely head straight to Disney Plus, instead of Netflix.

According to Variety, at its launch, the Star Wars series,’ Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will be available for streaming on Disney’s platform. There is no release date for the second season of The Mandalorian yet. Additionally, Variety states, Disney announced they would be doing a prequel series based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series will detail the stories of Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna.

Disney Plus launches in November 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on December 20, 2019.
