Arya and Gendry’s Relationship Was Foreshadowed in the First Episode of Game of Thrones

WARNING: This story contains spoilers about Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2.

Arya Stark and Gendry’s newfound relationship took viewers by surprise in last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, but it was actually foreshadowed back in Season 1. After their hookup at Winterfell, viewers pointed out on Twitter that in the first episode, Robert Baratheon (Gendry’s dad) told Ned Stark (Arya’s dad) that they should join their houses by setting up their kids.

“I have a son, you have a daughter. We’ll join our houses,” Robert tells Ned in the Winterfell crypts. At the time, he was referring to Joffrey and Sansa, who were betrothed earlier in the show. However, the statement also applies to Gendry, Robert’s bastard son, and Arya, Ned’s younger daughter.

GoT fans freaked out when they realized the parallel. Some had even predicted that Arya and Gendry would end up together months ago, but longtime supporters of the duo (Garya? Andry?) had been hoping for a romance since they first met.

As a refresher, Arya and Gendry meet at the end of Season 1 when they’re recruited to join the Night’s Watch after Ned Stark’s beheading. (Arya had to disguise herself as a boy for her own safety.) Their travels take them from Harrenhal to the Brotherhood without Banners before Gendry is ultimately sold to Melisandre, who brings him to Stannis Baratheon as a possible sacrifice to the Lord of Light.

Arya and Gendry’s reunion in last week’s episode marked their first time seeing each other since they were separated seasons ago. But what began as a friendship turned into a total flirtfest this time around. Plus, recalling his blacksmith skills, Arya even asks Gendry to forge a special weapon for her for the upcoming war against the dead. Will they survive the battle so they can join their houses as their fathers had predicted?

Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO at 9 P.M. ET.
