WWE ends WrestleMania 35 in most fitting and controversial way possible

Becky Lynch truly is The Man in WWE now — but not without a bit of controversy.

Raw women’s champion Ronda Rousey went for the Piper’s Pit and Lynch countered by pinning the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion for the 1-2-3 and a flash finish at WrestleMania 35 in front of an announced crowd of 82,265 MetLife Stadium early Monday morning. The victory over Rousey and Charlotte Flair earns Lynch the Raw and SmackDown women’s championships and the honor of winning the first women’s match to be the main event at WrestleMania.

The victory didn’t come without a bit of controversy as it appeared Rousey’s shoulder was up during the one-count of the fall She left the ring visably upset. There are rumors Rousey may take a break from WWE to start a family with husband Travis Browne after this WrestleMania, but the finish left the door open for a rematch.

It’s unclear if this was how the match was scripted to end or if their was a botch of some kind. Lynch appears to press her legs harder to Rousey’s shoulders later in the count to ensure they are down and Mike Cole showed little hesitation on commentary to the finish that left a lot of stunned faces in the crowd.

The outcomes brings to a close a storyline that began at last year’s SummerSlam, when Flair won her way into the SmackDown women’s championship match and beat Asuka and Lynch for the belt. The emotion from that and Lynch finding her new persona helped turn her into one of the biggest stars in the industry right now. Lynch’s budding fame may still not have been enough for WWE to hand Rousey her first singles loss cleanly.

The match, which started around midnight, closed a show that saw Kofi Kingston defeat Daniel Bryan to become the WWE champion, Seth Rollins topping Brock Lesnar to earn the Universal title and Kurt Angle losing his retirement match to Baron Corbin. John Cena even interrupted Elias’ performance in his old Doctor of Thuganomics persona during the seven-plus hours of action that saw eight title changes.

Having the main event at WrestleMania was the culmination of the women’s evolution in WWE, which unofficially began in 2015 with the hashtag “GiveDivasAChance” after a tag team match on “Monday Night Raw” between Emma and Paige and the Bella Twins that lasted all but a minute.
