Sheff Utd on brink of promotion to Premier League after sweeping aside Ipswich

SHEFFIELD UNITED are on the brink of a Premier League return after beating Ipswich 2-0 in the Championship's evening kick-off.

Before Norwich's clash with Blackburn, the Blades sit top of the league and six points clear of Leeds – who have two games remaining.

The Elland Road club sit third and are the only team that can catch Chris Wilder's men – although they would need to overturn a 13 goal difference deficit to do so.

Leeds host likely play-off rivals Aston Villa tomorrow before travelling to already relegated Ipswich on the final day while the Blades have just one game left – away to Stoke.

Goals either side of half-time from Scott Hogan and Jack O'Connell mean the club look certain to return to the Premier League for the first time since they went down in 2007.

The Blades were relegated on the last day of the season losing 2-1 at home to Wigan – with former Blade David Unsworth scoring the winning penalty for the visitors.

Despite matters having been in their own hands for weeks before, after their relegation United became embroiled in a legal row with West Ham – who they claimed had stayed up illegally after their signing of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano earlier in the season.

The matter was eventually settled with the Hammers paying a reported £35m compensation.

There will certainly be no love lost between the two sets of fans when the teams go head-to-head next season.

Sheffield United need just a point from their last game – or for Leeds to drop points – to mathematically confirm their place in the top-flight next season.
