Mourinho does not ‘believe too much’ Solskjaer will improve Man Utd in the long term

The Red Devils continued their revival under the Norwegian with a 3-2 victory over Southampton on Saturday to boost their hopes of Champions League qualification.

The ex-United striker got more points in his first ten games than any manager in Premier League history following his takeover from the Portuguese in December.

Solskjaer has already surpassed Mourinho's win record this season and Sun Sport revealed Ed Woodward is set to give the interim boss the job on a permanent basis.

However, Mourinho remains unconvinced by the Norwegian's impact at the club and likened the situation to Fulham's decision to replace Claudio Ranieri with Scott Parker.

Speaking on beIN Sports, the former United boss said: “Can [Fulham] get a better manager than Claudio? Not at all.

“Can you compare the experience between Claudio and Scott, who is going to coach a team for the first time? Not at all.

“But sometimes in football, and you have the example with my former club (Man Utd hiring Solskjaer), that sometimes changes on the immediate – I don’t believe too much in these changes in the long term – but these changes on the immediate, there are sometimes some positive results."

Mourinho's view has not been shared by former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who believes his ex-teammate has shown he deserves the job full time.

Ferdinand said: "He can't do anything else. Ole has put himself in a position where he can't be told no. He has forced Ed Woodward's hand.

"When Ole signed I wasn't standing there jumping and saying, 'This is the best signing we've got, brilliant, I'm delighted with this.' But I wasn't saying, 'He's rubbish'.

"I didn't expect him, and Ed Woodward wouldn't have either, to do what he has done. He has exceeded everyone's expectations and has made it nigh on impossible for anyone to say no."

Ferdinand also confirmed that he disagrees with Paul Ince, who claimed a lot of people could achieve the same results as Solskjaer.

He added: "I don't agree with that, because one of the most decorated managers of our generation, Jose Mourinho, couldn't do it."
