McTominay moves ahead of £52m flop Fred in Man Utd pecking order after West Brom loan bid rejection

McTominay was willing to get regular football in the Championship.

But the 22-year-old was instead told by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he was needed at Old Trafford.

Caretaker boss Solskjaer was preparing for Maouane Fellaini’s departure to Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan and told McTominay to stay and get a chance with United.

And he has been given sub appearances, ahead of Fred, against Fulham and Chelsea since the deadline passed.

Fred, 25, arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £52million deal as Jose Mourinho’s biggest summer before the start of the season.

But he has not started a Premier League game since Boxing Day when he picked for the win against Huddersfield.

His only appearance since has been the FA Cup win over Reading when he was taken off after the hour mark.

McTominay has edged ahead of him following his deal to the Hawthorns until the end of the season getting snubbed.

Both men will now be vying to be part of Solskjaer’s squad when United welcome top of the table Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday.
