Berbatov announces his retirement aged 38 after incredible career that included Man Utd and Spurs spells – The Sun

FORMER Manchester United and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has announced his retirement from football.

The 38-year-old has called time on an illustrious career that lasted two decades and saw him lift two Premier League titles with the Red Devils.


Berbatov also enjoyed spells at Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham and Monaco among others before ending his career in India with Kerala Blasters.

In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram, Berba wrote: "I did it my way!

"My last game was more then one year ago, so I think it's the right time now to stop and it's long overdue!

"The time has come to say that after almost 20 years playing football, I am stopping my professional ACTIVE football career!

"I will miss it! The games, training, the goals, preparation, the pressure, my teammates… the roar of the fans when I scored another banger.

"I was blessed to have the opportunity to play with one of the best ever and against some of the best ever!

"I had my highs and of course some lows in my career, won my fair share of trophies, scored some goals along the way as well!

"I played the way I wanted play, and I scored the goals I wanted to score!

"Thank you to all the people who helped me develop, and become the player I always wanted to be!

"Thank you to all my former teams my teammates and my coaches and staff! It was a pleasure! I know at times I was not easy to work with, but I always gave my everything for the teams I played for!"

Berbatov's career began in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia before moving to Leverkusen in 2001.

It was in Germany where scouts from top European teams began to take notice and he eventually made the move to Tottenham in 2006.

Following two years in North London including a League Cup win, Berbatov made the deadline day move to United.

He became a fan favourite at Old Trafford winning two league titles and the League Cup during his four years under Sir Alex Ferguson.

A move to Fulham followed before he left the Premier League for good to see out his career a Monaco, PAOK and finally Kerala Blasters.

Berbatov made 665 professional appearances throughout his career scoring 281 goals.
