Axed Huddersfield boss David Wagner eyed to take over at struggling Schalke

EX-HUDDERSFIELD boss David Wagner is being lined-up to take over as manager of Schalke, three months after being axed by the Terriers.

The German-American gaffer, 47, has been out of work since January and has been tipped for a return to a Bundesliga club, according to reports.

Wagner has never managed in the top tier at his native country, but was head coach of Borussia Dortmund's second string.

Now he is being touted for a switch to their fierce rivals Schalke, who won the Ruhr derby in a controversial 4-2 victory.

Bild claim Wagner is a good bet for the job, having played for the club between 1995 and 97.

Huddersfield were rooted to the bottom of the Premier League when Wagner left, with just 11 points from 22 games.

He had earlier propelled them into the Prem for the first time, finishing 16th in their first season in the big leagues.

But Town failed to get the ball into the back of the net often enough with just 20 goals in 36 games.

His successor Jan Siewert has not had much more luck, with just one win under his leadership.

Schalke have had a rotten season themselves.

Their win over title challengers Dortmund all-but secured their top-flight status for next season.

They reached the last 16 of the Champions League this season as well, losing 10-2 on aggregate to Manchester City in a humiliating exit.
