Top five funny questions you’ll get asked in an Aldi interview

If you've ever fancied a job at supermarket Aldi then here's your chance to see what they have in store for you at an interview.

The retailer employees around 32,000 people at more than 830 UK stores, and is ranked third in The Times top 100 Graduate Employers.

So, what do you have to do, to get on the payroll?

Below are five "typical" questions that pop up during the interview process.

Question 1

Your store’s crazy-busy one cold, wet December.

Even with an efficient and talented team, it’s still a really busy time and you’re already working extra hours this week.

Your Manager calls to see if you can start your shift a few hours early.

Would you:

A) Say you’d rather not. You know it’s busy but you’d like to start at your normal time.

B) Arrive early. We’re a team aren’t we? Let’s get through this together.

C) Bring your mum and your auntie to help – more hands on deck has got to be good!

Aldi says the best answer is B.

"Great. It's about being a thoughtful member of the team and pulling together to make it work.

"We wouldn't expect you to always come in early but there's always that rare occasion when your Aldi spirit would come into play."

Question 2

Snow, snow and more snow… In fact, the lorries are struggling to get into the car park and unload pallets for the next day’s trading.

You’ve just finished a 10-hour shift. What’s going through your mind?

A) I’m ready to get into my onesie and watch telly

B) I need to call someone to help them. It’s important to get the stock in for tomorrow.

C) We can’t leave these poor guys to dig themselves out. Come on, get your spade, we’ll clear it in no time.

Aldi said although B "puts you on the right lines", they want you to say answer C.

"Wonderful. Good for you," Aldi said.

"This is about acting in the moment and realising that the more people there are to help, the better.

"We all help out stores to be a success and that's why it feels good to work here."

Question 3

Your store’s just had a big extension and tomorrow is ‘the big reveal’.

The Area Manager’s looking for a big splash to get a bit of press attention. What do you do?

A) Reveal your long list of ideas. Balloons for the kids, fresh cakes, competitions to win £100 worth of shopping… someone can have some fun organising all that.

B) Roll your eyes, it’s a shop isn't it? What do they want, dancing ponies?

C) You’ve already started blowing up the balloons. ‘Now let’s see how many cakes do we need? Shall I speak to the Manager to get some extra pallets of doughnuts in?’

Aldi said: "If you say A – 'Nice ideas, you’re really getting into the spirit of it all.

"But at Aldi we don’t just let someone else get on with it. We take ownership. This is our business, we can make it a success together.

"If you say C – 'Fabulous, you’re the kind of person who knows that time is precious and you need to get moving.

"You think on your feet and you make things happen. And, after all, you’re really proud of showing off the new store to the public."

Question 4

An elderly customer has just bought a flatscreen telly. What would you say to her?

A) That’s a lovely telly, I’ve got one really similar at home. Did you know you can rewind live programmes just by pressing that button?

B) Do you want some help there? I can carry it to your car if you like?

C) Thanks I’ll just run that through the till for you. Next customer please!

 

Here Aldi want you to answer B. " 'Great. An Aldi person would always take service to another level.

"It’s about using your initiative and joining up the dots you know? Helping her out to the car would make her day."

Question 5

Our customers love our weekly Specialbuy products, and they've definitely got their favourites.

A lady is wandering around looking for last week’s garden furniture offer.

She seems quite distraught when you say 'we’ve sold out'. What do you do?

A) Ring up a local Aldi and see if they’ve got any they could send over.

B) Suggest that they try another Aldi store to see if they have any of the product left in stock.

C) Shrug your shoulders and say “Sorry love, when it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Did you answer A? "Brilliant. Our stores are popping up all over the place and there’s bound to be one nearby.

"It shows that you’re taking the request seriously and you’re prepared to move mountains to make her happy.

"There’s every chance she’ll tell her friends and convince them to shop here too. Word of mouth is a powerful thing."

Did you answer all five correctly?

If so, Aldi said: "Amazing. Well it seems you’re really feeling the Aldi vibe.

"Extremely helpful and full of initiative, you know what it takes to make our stores a success.

"You know how to treat our customers and look after your fellow colleagues. Well done."
