Mom who was diagnosed with cancer same day she became a widow dies

A 38-year-old Minnesota mother who was diagnosed with an inoperable cancer the same day her husband succumbed to his battle with ALS in 2017 has died, according to new reports.

Tessie Sylvester of Minneapolis passed away on May 1 — two years after she was diagnosed with cancer in June 2017, on the same day her 44-year-old husband John died from Lou Gehrig’s disease, People reported.

The mom of two had just returned from making funeral arrangements when she received the devastating news that she had stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a gland-based cancer that affects various organs.

“I sat there with [John’s body] for a second just crying. Then my parents came over and I think I just went into shock,” Sylvester previously told the magazine after she received the diagnosis.

Sylvester’s sister, Jenny Halverson, told Today the widow’s first thought was making sure her two sons would be taken care of.

“We sat down and she said, ‘Jenny, if I die promise you’ll be a mom to my boys,’ and I said, ‘Of course I will, Tessie, but we’re gonna fight this. We’re not going to think about anything of this other stuff,’” Halverson said. “I needed her to be OK.”

Sylvester battled the aggressive cancer for two years — but sensing the end was near in April, she asked her sister to adopt her two sons.

“Tessie did so much to lay the groundwork to help Freddy and Gus face life without her,” Halverson told Today.

Sylvester died two weeks later.
