Billboard Music Awards: Florida Georgia Line, Bebe Rexha were ‘Meant To Be’ top country song

A year dominating the Hot Country Songs chart ended with an award that was meant to be for Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha.

The Nashville-born duo FGL brought home Top Country Song honors Wednesday at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards for “Meant To Be,” the smash pop crossover collaboration.

Florida Georgia Line came out ahead of Luke Combs, Dan + Shay and Kane Brown in the category.

Broadcasting live on NBC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, FGL members Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley accepted the award.

“We’ve been on an incredible journey,” Hubbard said in the speech. “As artists, we get to experience so many unbelievable things but our opinion it’s all for nothing if your’e not using your platform for better.

“This creative life is bigger than ourselves.”

Kelley added: “This is bucket list for us, y’all.”

Florida Georgia Line appeared earlier in the broadcast, briefly backing Kelly Clarkson during medley of Billboard hits.

Unlike most A-list honors, the Billboard Music Awards doesn’t rely on votes from industry insiders to determine who brings home hardware. Similar to Billboard chart placement, acts win on record and touring sales, streaming performance and radio play.

“Meant To Be” spent a record-breaking 50 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart; the song peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart.
