An emotional Emilia Clarke paid tribute to Daenerys Targaryen, her former cast-mates and her late father on Monday morning as fans digested the dramatic finale of HBO’s long running fantasy drama, Game Of Thrones.

The British actress became a household name thanks to her role as the ultimately doomed Mother of Dragons, a role she played for eight consecutive seasons prior to Sunday evening’s dramatic conclusion.

And with the character suffering a grisly end after finally claiming the Iron Throne, Emilia, 32, bid farewell to Daenerys by admitting the role, created by author George RR Martin before being brought to the screen, was responsible for shaping her career.

All over: Daenerys suffered a grisly end at the hand of Jon Snow during Sunday evening’s dramatic finale

‘Finding the words to write this post has left me overwhelmed with how much I want to say but how small words feel in comparison to what this show and Dany have meant to me,’ she told Instagram followers.

‘The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life. This woman has taken up the whole of my heart. I’ve sweated in the blaze of dragon fire, shed many tears at those who left our family early, and wrung my brain dry trying to do Khaleesi and the masterful words, actions (and names) I was given, justice.’

The actress also admitted the ending made her long for her sound engineer father, who died of cancer in 2016.

‘Game of Thrones has shaped me as a woman, as an actor and as a human being,’ she added. ‘I just wish my darling dad was here now to see how far we’ve flown.

Old times: The actress shared behind the scenes shots of the entire cast as she bid farewell to the hugely popular show

Say cheese: Emila’s social media post included a shot of the cast in their usual clothes

‘But to you, dear kind magical fans, I owe you so much thanks, for your steady gaze at what we’ve made and what I’ve done with a character that was already in the hearts of many before I slipped on the platinum wig of dreams. Without you there is no us.

Referencing Jon Snow’s famous line, she added: ‘And now our watch has ended.’

The actress accompanied her post with behind-the-scenes shots of her cast-mates, both in and out of character as they posed for various group shots.

Elsewhere Sophie Turner paid tribute to Sansa Stark, whose fate appeared to be significantly brighter than Danys’ as the show reached its climax with the character being named Queen of the North.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: ‘Sansa, Thank you for teaching me resilience, bravery and what true strength really is. Thank you teaching me to be kind and patient and to lead with love. I grew up with you.

Mother of dragons: A behind-the-scenes shot of Daenerys Targaryen’s carefully braided hair was also posted on Sunday evening

Goodbye my lover: Fans watched as Jon murdered Daenerys after she single handedly destroyed of Kings Landing

‘I fell in love with you at 13 and now 10 years on.. at 23 I leave you behind, but I will never leave behind what you’ve taught me.

‘To the show and the incredible people who make it, thank you for giving me the best life and drama lessons I could have ever asked for. Without you I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Thank you for giving me this chance all those years ago.

‘And finally to the fans. Thank you for falling in love with these characters and supporting this show right through till the end. I’ll miss this more than anything.’

All over: After nine-years, eight seasons and hundreds of brutal deaths it was never going to please everyone, and the Game Of Thrones finale inevitably divided fans after it aired on Monday morning

Throne claim: But fans were predictably divided about the outcome, and indeed a season that has been mired by editing gaffes, shaky screenplays and disappointing story arcs

New ruler: Bran Stark was named ruler of the six kingdoms, with Winterfell and the north maintaining its independence as a kingdom in its own right

After nine-years, eight seasons and hundreds of brutal deaths it was never going to please everyone, and the finale inevitably divided fans after it aired on Monday morning.

The sixth and final episode in its much vaunted farewell season concluded with the expected death of Daenerys, the surprise anointment of crippled Bran Stark to king of Westeros and the rather symbolic destruction of the Iron Throne.

Elsewhere Sansa Stark was declared Queen in the North, with Winterfell maintaining its traditional independence  – making Bran the ‘lord of the Six Kingdoms and the protector of the realm.’

But fans were predictably divided about the outcome, and indeed a season that has been mired by editing gaffes, shaky screenplays and disappointing story arcs.

Evidently unimpressed with Bran’s rapid promotion to ruler of Westeros, one viewer shared a meme of a man struggling in a wheelchair with the accompanying caption: ‘Bran on his way to claim the throne’.

The death of Daenerys at the hands of Jon Snow and loyal dragon Drogon’s reaction touched the hearts of viewers, including Twitter user @emiliacIarked who posted: ‘the most heartbreaking part of this scene is the way drogon nudges daenerys. he has lost both his brothers and now his mother. he deserves so much better. nobody speak to me ever again.’ (sic)

SPOILER: The shocking end to Daenerys’ reign

Deep thought: A viewer showed Captain Kirk of Star Trek thinking about the fate of Bran and Jon Snow

Another disappointed fan shared an image on Twitter of a boy resting his head on his hand while deep in thought, with the caption: ‘Me thinking about all the hours I’ve spent on GOT only to be given this trash finale’.

Another tweet made fun of the ‘parallels of Bran being thrown out a window in the first episode and the show being thrown out a window in the last episode.’

Elsewhere a tweet shared before the finale aired pointed out the cool reception that Dany likely would be receiving from Sansa after burning down King’s Landing killing women and children.

‘Sansa kicking Daenerys out of Winterfell after she finds out what she did,’ read the accompanying caption.

While some were disappointed with the show’s outcome, others were disappointed that it had finally come to an end.

‘After tonight, my life is going to be drastically different knowing there’s no more game of thrones to look forward to,’ tweeted one devastated viewer.

Stunned silence: The ending of the HBO fantasy show left some in stunned silence

Others appeared to be making the best of a tough situation, with one fan baking treats before sharing a photo on social media with the caption: ‘Happy cupcakes for sad endings.’

Clearly outraged with Jon’s relegation to the Night’s Watch, one fan ranted: ‘What happened to him was disappointing, he deserved BETTER!!’

While another wrote: ‘Just finished @GameOfThrones Probably the most disappointing final season of any show I’ve ever watched. The most damning thing I can say is that when I started the final episode and began to think of what might happen, I realized I no longer cared and just wanted it to be over.’

But not everyone was disappointed, with one writing: ‘After 8 long seasons and we couldn’t ask for a better ending than this. A mixture of emotions, with highs and lows but at the same time completely unravels and settles and mystery sets your heart at peace.’

Mixed reaction: Most fans were inevitably divided after taking to Twitter in the early hours of Monday morning

Celebs such as Modern Family star Sofia Vergara and actress/filmmaker Elizabeth Banks also shared their thoughts on the finale, though some were dismayed that they couldn’t actually watch it.

Actress/writer Mindy Kaling tweeted a snap of Fozzie Bear looking dismayed, stating, ‘When you’re travelling internationally on the day of the #GameOfThronesFinale.’

Meanwhile Sofia took to her Instagram story to share a number of videos and photos for her Game of Thrones finale party.

She was seen posing with two guests dressed up as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, while the actress wore a black shirt that featured a famous Thrones catch phrase, ‘You know nothing.’

The actress even had a number of Iron Throne replicas on display at her Thrones-themed party, as evidenced on her Instagram story.

Comedian Dane Cook expressed his frustration about people like Geary complaining about spoilers, stating, ‘get the f*** off Twitter it’s a minefield of spoilers forever.’

Pretty Little Liars star Brant Daugherty didn’t pull any punches when he took to Twitter, calling the finale, ‘one of the sloppiest episodes of television I’ve ever seen,’ in a multi-tweet thread.

‘No emotional stakes or sense of structure whatsoever. It’s almost remarkable how much I hated it,’ he added.

He criticized the final season as a whole as well, calling it, ‘just the worst way to approach a last season and it’s exactly what I was fearing they would do.’

Fans were also left questioning another editing blunder after a plastic water bottle was seen behind the leg of Sam Tarly, played by John Bradley.

‘LMAOOO I CAN’T BREATHE THEY DID IT AGAIN First Starbucks now a water bottle this show is a joke #GameOfThrones #GameOfThronesFinale #TheFinalEpisode,’ one fan wrote.

Another added: ‘It’s not just there, I actually found the second water bottle next to Ser Davos. #GameOfThrones.’

When the writers just want to get over the show and leave a water bottle in the scene #GameOfThrones #watergate2019 #GameOfThronesFinale #starbuckscup all over again,’ commented a third disappointed fan.

Oh dear: Game Of Thrones fans branded the show a joke as they spotted a water bottle in the finale in another awkward editing blunder after THAT coffee cup

Incredulous: Fans couldn’t contain their disbelief after spotting the gaffe on Sunday evening

Despite their frustration, fans can take comfort in knowing that counselors are standing by, ready to help them sort out their emotions about the way the show ends.

A Bark.com listing has gone up, advertising the launch and availability of ‘specialized Game of Thrones counselling service to help bereft fans seek support and get the help they need through this tough time.’

The listing clarifies that these ‘qualified counselors’ are ‘familiar’ with the series — naturally — and will be able to help fans ‘digest their feelings and interpretation of the show, which could range from anger and confusion to sadness and grief.’

Tense moment: The plastic bottle was barely shielded by John Bradley’s leg while he was in character as Sam Tarly

Those who sign up for the sessions will connect with their counselors via Skype for £20 (roughly $25) for a 30-minute session and £40 ($50) for an hour-long session, according to the listing.

It appears that fans will be able to pick their counselor, although it’s unclear exactly what sort of qualifications these counselors have.

While it may seem a bit overboard for fans of a TV show to require professional help because the series is ending, a Bark.com counselor said that the connection that people have with their favorite TV shows and movies often result in particularly strong attachments to the entertainment properties.

Drama: Emotions ran high as the Game Of Thrones finale aired at Brennan’s bar in Marina del Rey, California on Sunday evening

Game of Thrones fans share their reactions to SHOCKING death on social media

After the epic Battle of Winterfell on last week’s Game of Thrones, the death count was much lower in Sunday night’s episode.

Still, there was a very significant death at the end of the fourth episode of the six-episode season, with Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) being brutally beheaded in front of the woman who freed her, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Given how fans have connected with Missandei since she made her GoT debut in the Season 3 premiere, fans were not pleased with her death.

Purest character: Fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to Missandei, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, after her character was killed on Sunday’s episode of Game Of Thrones

‘From her very first moment to her last, she was nothing but good,’ Twitter user @oshawildling said. ‘Thank you Missandei for being the purest character,’ she added with the #GameOfThrones hashtag.

Another Twitter user dubbed @solangenaranjo5 said, ‘Missandei DIDN’T DESERVE THIS’ with the #GameOfThrones hashtag and a crying meme.

Another fan, @allenyousif, even tried to predict how Daenerys Targaryen would react to this savage beheading.

Not fair: Another Twitter post showed a woman crying along with the caption, ‘Missandei DIDN’T DESERVE THIS’

Leaked picture: A fan posted a ‘leaked picture’ of King’s Landing in the next episode along with a picture of a pile of rubble

‘Leaked picture of kings landing next episode’ along with a photo of dust and rubble, hinting that Daenerys’ remaining dragon will burn it all to the ground.

Other fans were sad that Jon Snow just pawned off his direwolf Ghost, who was previously a big part of the show along with the other surviving direwolves.

‘We all said protect Ghost from the Night King at all cost not realizing it’d be Jon to hurt him the most,’ said @jayoheeeleyeee.

Sad moment: Viewers also were sad to see Ghost being sent away to the North by Jon Snow

Total outrage: Viewers also shared their outrage after Jaime Lannister after having sex with Brienne left her to embark on a mission in King’s Landing

Another pivotal moment in the series is when Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) had sex with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) for her first time.

While Brienne had a unique relationship with Jaime for years, she had recently attracted the affections of Tormund Giantsbane, with some upset that she ended up with Jaime and not Tormund.

‘TORMUND WOULD HAVE NEVER DONE THIS TO BRIENNE,’ said @iHarshallWitts.

Pregnancy news: The familiar so-called Blinking White Guy meme was used as a substitute for Euron overhearing that Tyrion knew about Cersei’s pregnancy

Others reacted to Tyrion Lannister’s speech about his sister Cersei’s unborn child, and how her new lover Euron Greyjoy may have reacted to that.

Pop star and longtime Game of Thrones fan Drake also showed his support for Arya Stark once again before this week’s episode.

There were also others who poked fun at the last episode being super dark.

Hold on: Shrek was shown with a confused look on his face as another substitute for Euron as Tyrion told Cersei that her baby doesn’t have to die

Final season: Drake was shown in an altered photo wearing an Arya jersey as fans nervously took to social media Sunday ahead of the fourth episode of season eight of Game Of Thrones

Maximum brightness: Twitter user @neontaster made light of last week’s episode that some viewers complained was too dark with a picture of the brightness on a TV adjusted to the maximum

Game Of Thrones fans take to social media as Arya trends on Twitter

Game Of Thrones fans took to social media to comment on an epic battle during Sunday’s episode as the Night King and his army marched on Winterfell.

Fans of the HBO show were ready for the fight early as one viewer took to Twitter before the episode aired and posted a photo showing two dozen of the characters including Daenerys Targaryen, Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister with votive candles.

The dark caption read: ‘me prepping for tomorrow’.

Twitter reaction: Arya started trending on Twitter after Sunday’s episode of Game Of Thrones that showed the Battle of Winterfell

The episode titled The Long Knight showed the Army of the Dead overpowering the Army of the Living as the Night King’s forces took the upper hand.

The Night King arrived at the Godswood to kill Bran Stark, but Arya ambushed and killed him with a Valyrian steel dagger and his undead army collapsed.

Arya started trending high on Twitter as fans rejoiced over her heroic move.

One Twitter user asked others to retweet ‘if you are in love with Arya’ as fans embraced the character played since 2011 by English actress Maisie Williams, 22

Another shared a photo of the character as a younger girl and captioned it: ‘Arya is the real MVP’.

Arya using her Valyrian steel dagger to kill the Night King also drew a comparison to NBA player Damian Lillard, 28, whose 37-foot, game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer last week for the Portland Trail Blazers was the dagger that ended the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs.

A tweet that read ‘Arya Stark:’ was followed by a photo of Lillard after his game-winning, series-clinching dagger.

Popular reference: The heroine’s face was super-imposed over the Portland Trail Blazers star

It wasn’t the only NBA reference as The Ringer compared Arya’s hand switch with her dagger to Michael Jordan’s famous hand switching during Game 2 of the NBA Finals in June 1991.

A video clip showing Jordan switching ball into his left hand against the Los Angeles Lakers en route to a 21-point win was compared to Arya’s dagger drop and hand switch before fatally stabbing the Night King.
