Warring couples racing to split on ‘Divorce Day’ today could face month’s wait due to surge in cases – The Sun

WARRING couples racing to split on “Divorce Day” today could face a month’s wait due to a surge in cases.

The first working Monday after Christmas is when many call it quits following festive bust-ups.

Family lawyer Samantha Farndale said: “A rush of cases at the start of January can create a real backlog for the courts, which creates delays.

“In previous years we have seen clients face up to four weeks’ wait on their cases.

“Spending days together in closer quarters can bring up issues.”

Researchers say one in ten couples were planning a divorce in December before festive celebrations even began.

Family law specialists Slater and Gordon quizzed 2,000 married couples and found that a third were unhappy or “somewhat” happy.

Days cooped up together and the stress of making Christmas perfect are given as the main reason for break-ups.

Other triggers include spending too much time with a spouse’s relatives, rubbish gifts and booze-fuelled rows.

January also sees a surge in lonely hearts making a New Year resolution to look for love.

Yesterday — dubbed “Singles Sunday” — was predicted to be the busiest in the history of online dating with traffic peaking at 11pm.
