Twenty criminals due to be deported from the UK on a flight to Jamaica were removed from the plane yesterday after being given a last-minute reprieve.

Up to 50 foreign offenders were set to leave from an RAF base. Home Secretary Sajid Javid had said every man had been convicted of a serious crime and posed a danger to the public.

But crooks were removed from the jet after a row broke out – fuelled by Labour MPs and immigration lawyers.

Most of the men had lodged 11th hour appeals against being kicked out of the country, while three are due to give evidence next month at an inquest into the death of an illegal immigrant at a detention centre.

Lawyers also secured an injunction to halt the deportation of Twane Morgan, a Jamaican who served in the British Army before being discharged with combat stress in 2007.

Morgan, who was jailed for six years for assault in 2011, says his offence was a result of his mental condition.

Campaigners tried to halt the flight, but it finally took off with 29 Jamaican criminals on board, including a murderer, rapist and 14 drug dealers.

The BME Lawyers 4 Justice group, said: ‘The resumption of these deportation flights is a grievous and appalling insult to the principles of justice and fairness.’

Under immigration law, foreign offenders who have been sentenced to 12 months or longer in prison can be automatically deported from the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘Yesterday 29 serious foreign criminals were flown to Jamaica on a chartered flight.

‘The law requires we seek to deport foreign nationals who abuse our hospitality by committing crimes in the UK.’
