Thousands of schoolkids across the UK to go on 'strike' and walk out of classes in climate change demands

Youth Strike 4 Climate organisers say youngsters in 60 towns and cities are involved.

They insist that action is needed because of “an alarming lack of government leadership” on the issue.

Students are demanding the Government declare a climate emergency and take radical steps to tackle the problem.

They also want the voting age lowered to 16 so they can influence policy.

It comes after similar action in countries such as Australia and  Belgium.

Anna Taylor, of UK Student Climate Network, said: “We’re running out of time for meaningful change. We’ve had enough and we’re making sure our voice is heard.”

Education Secretary Damian Hinds said: “Missing class won’t do a thing to help the environment. All they will do is create extra work for teachers.”

The National Association of Head Teachers said: “Nothing is more important than education.”

But the strike is being supported by eco campaign groups. Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said: “This generation is taking action to build a fairer, safer world.”

More strikes are due on March 15.
