Son of Russian spies who inspired ‘The Americans’ allowed to stay in Canada

The son of two convicted Russians spies, who inspired the FX series “The Americans,” will be allowed to stay in Canada, the country’s Supreme Court has ruled.

Alexander Vavilov, 25, was born in the country and holds Canadian citizenship, but his future there has been in jeopardy since his parents were busted by the FBI for being part of an espionage ring 10 years ago.

“It’s a huge relief,” Vavilov told reporters after the news. ”I am happy to be back in Canada, to be here without this constant doubt in my head, with the ability to finally put down roots and build a life for myself. It’s going to take time. But I’m happy I can move forward with my life and put these problems behind me.”

The spy ring Vavilov’s parents were part of formed the basis for the critically acclaimed thriller “The Americans.”

The younger Vavilov, who works in finance, said he had no idea his parents had been Russian sleeper agents, saying the FBI arrests took him by surprise.

”I thought the FBI had the wrong house,” he said. “I did not believe it.”
