Chiedza Mukotsanjera, 12, has been left without family in the UK after her single mother died from Covid-19.

She is being looked after by members of the Renew Church in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, where her mum was a member.

Rutendo, 45, worked as a health official, and had previously worked for a bank in Zimbabwe.

She passed away on April 10.

Church officials have contacted Chiedza’s family in Zimbabwe to discuss the young girl’s future.

The pastor has also started a fundraiser to support Chichi and pay for her mother’s funeral, which has raised over £30,000.

Pastor Matthew Murray wrote: “Chiedza (who we all know as Chichi) was inseparable from her mum and is understandably very upset after being told the news late last night.

“Chichi is currently being cared for and is in the safe hands of a member of our church nearby as we begin the logistics of what life will look like for Chichi in the next few weeks and months.

“We still don’t know where Chichi will live and we are talking to her family in Zimbabwe to discuss the best possible plan.

“Whatever happens, we WILL support her. She is one of our own.”

He added: “This fund will help with any funeral and legal costs and ALL surplus will be given to aiding Chichi’s future.”

The pastor said that Ms Mukotsanjera was “kind and generous and selfless”, and would send money to help her family in Zimbabwe.

He said: “She was just a hero really. She always worked hard. She did everything she could to help Chichi. She was her world.

“She sent funds back to Zimbabwe. She served in our car home ministry and helped give out gifts.”

The JustGiving fundraiser has raised over £30,000 so far.

Ms Mukotsanjera's cousin, Cindy Munyavi, tweeted: "Thank you for your prayers. Unfortunately my cousin Rutendo Mukotsanjera didn't make it.

"She was an amazing person. Covid-19 is such a harsh reality and it takes losing a loved one for one to realise what a monster it is.

"Please stay at home for your sake and others."

It comes as another health worker, Mary Agyapong, 28, died from coronavirus five days after her baby was saved by an emergency C-section.

The nurse, who “devoted her life to the NHS”, was taken into hospital on Tuesday last week and tragically died on Easter Sunday at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Her newborn daughter, also named Mary, was born shortly after she was admitted, when doctors performed an emergency caesarean.

The chief executive of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, David Carter, said: “Mary worked here for five years and was a highly valued and loved member of our team, a fantastic nurse and a great example of what we stand for in this trust.

“She tested positive for Covid-19 after being tested on April 5 and was admitted to the hospital on April 7.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mary’s family and friends at this sad time.”
