Shocking video shows elephants being beaten with metal HOOKS and chained up at sick festival for tourists in Nepal

THIS is the sickening moment chained-up elephants are beaten with hooks to make them perform for tourists in Nepal.

The footage shows the animals being battered with bullhooks by trainers and jabbed with sharp sticks.

Elephants are also struck on their sensitive ears to make them play football and give rides to visitors at the Chitwan Elephant Festival.

Festival organisers claimed measures had been brought in to stop animal abuse but the shocking video reveals it is still continuing.

The footage was shared on social media by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Senior Vice President of International Campaigns Jason Baker said: "It is 2020 and the Chitwan authorities need to stop treating elephants like it's 1820.

"They should focus tourism on the amazing local culture and leave the animals alone."

Group activists staged a demonstration outside the Department of Tourism calling on the Nepalese government to stop supporting animal abuse.

It isn't the first time elephants have suffered horrific abuse so they will perform for tourists.

Wildlife photographer Norman Watson shared pictures of the animals being beaten with bamboo sticks and collapsed from exhaustion at the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Scottish snapper claimed elephants were in so much distress they were "screaming" and said the babies were "emaciated".

And in August, harrowing pictures showed a fragile old elephant being "tortured" by her owners, who hide the giant's emaciated body with a colourful festival costume.

Tikiri is shackled every night while joining a parade at the Perahera Festival in Sri Lanka.
