A street cleaner sweeps a stray puppy into his dustpan and chucks it off a bridge in this shocking footage.

Sefer Kayaci, 41, cleans the streets on a bridge over a river in the Kalkandere district of Rize province in Turkey.

Kayaci walks towards the kerb but suddenly uses his broom to drag the stray dog into his dustpan, before throwing it towards the river.

The animal reportedly broke its leg and was taken to a veterinary centre where it received treatment and recovered.

Kayaci said in a statement: ‘I was sweeping the street, all of a sudden my head went numb. At that moment I threw the dog. I actually love dogs, I feed them with milk.

‘I remembered the incident afterwards and I asked myself what I had done and I got mad with myself.

‘I take medicine. When I don’t take my medicine I become strange. I didn’t understand why I did that.

‘I told my mother about the incident, she got mad at me. I saw the dog afterwards and it wasn’t dead. If it was dead, I would have been punished more. I apologise to everybody.’

He added: ‘I regret what I have done. I wasn’t okay and it happened because I hadn’t taken my medicine. I actually love animals very much.’

Mayor of Kalkandere Kenan Yildirim also apologised for the worker’s behaviour, saying prosecutors will make a decision on the case while police look into it.
