Sheriff’s deputy suspended after video allegedly shows him body-slamming student — twice

A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been suspended after shocking surveillance footage caught him twice body-slamming a young student before dragging him down a hall, according to authorities.

The disturbing footage appears to show the school resource officer suddenly picking up the boy — who is half his size and younger than 12 — and flinging him violently to the ground at Vance County Middle School in Henderson last Thursday.

After seemingly screaming at him, he picks up the child and slams him back to the ground once more, the footage shows.

The officer — who has not been identified — then grabs the boy and drags him down the hall, disappearing off-camera at the school, about 45 miles north of Raleigh.

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame suspended the officer, one of two resource officers assigned to the school, while also asking the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to take over the probe.

“We were stunned, we were shocked,” Brame told CBS 17 of seeing the video brought to him by school officials. “I don’t expect my deputy, or any deputy in North Carolina, to carry out their duties in that way.”

He said the officer, who has been on the force for two years without complaint, did not explain what sparked the alleged on-camera assault.

Vance County District Attorney Mike Waters said the extent of the boy’s injuries could determine potential charges.

Vance County Schools said it was working with authorities on the investigation.

“We are deeply concerned by the actions that took place,” the district said in a statement.
