Distressing video has emerged of Sainsbury’s security guards holding a woman, who has been accused of assault, on the ground in front of shocked customers.

In the clip, two security guards at the store in Oldham, Greater Manchester, grip the screaming woman’s wrists so tightly that her left hand turns visibly purple.

The viral footage of the incident which happened on Friday 25 January has amassed almost one million views across Facebook since it was uploaded at the weekend.  

Great Manchester Police attended the scene and the 48-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault. She has since been released under investigation.

The clip – which was filmed by another customer – shows the woman being firmly held by her wrists by a pair of male security guards near the exit of the supermarket. 

One of the security guards is on the phone as he holds her down and she tearfully pleads with staff to let her go. 

The woman screams to the security guard clutching her left wrist: ‘Get off my hand! Get off my hand!’

Another man – who appears to be a customer – carries the woman’s handbag for her and requests the Sainsbury’s staff to let go of her. He asks ‘Get off her hand and everything will be ok’

The female points to her constricted hand, which is turning purple, and again shrieks: ‘He’s got my hand! The blood is… Please!!’

The other man begs the security guards to leave her and shouts: ‘Get off her hand! Get off her hand!’. He then starts trying to get other customers to help her.

As the woman weeps on the floor, the man filming the video moves the camera to show one of the security guards and says the staff member is: ‘a bully and he does it all the time to everybody.’

The woman continues shrieking in desperation as the two supermarket employees grip her wrists.

When she tries to get the security guard off her left wrist, the staff member becomes angry and reprimands his colleague for loosening his grip on her. He shouts: ‘Hold her hand! Hold her hand!’

The video then cuts to an end. The clip has racked up close to a million views across social media and users were divided about the clip.

Some individuals – who seemed were unaware of the woman’s arrest for aggressive behaviour – were left alarmed by the footage.

Steven Shallcross wrote: ‘Her hand had gone blue he was using that much force. Maybe if it was your mother or daughter he chose to restrain with excessive force you might think it was out of order’. 

Meanwhile others users defended the supermarket security guard and the force that the he used. 

Patrice Whitmore commented ‘She’s only distressed because she’s been caught doing something she shouldn’t simple! The security guard is doing his job!’

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Police were called shortly after 1pm on Friday 25 January 2019 to a report of a woman behaving aggressively at a supermarket on Union Street, Oldham.

‘Officers attended and a woman aged 48 was arrested on suspicion of assault. She has since been released under investigation. Enquiries are ongoing.’

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: ‘We won’t tolerate offensive, threatening or abusive behaviour towards members of staff’
