Search for woman who went overboard on luxury cruise called off

The search for a woman who went missing after going overboard from a luxury cruise liner between Mallorca and Menorca has been called off.

The passenger went missing from the Norwegian Epic which was travelling from Cannes in France to Palma de Mallorca in Spain, early on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said the woman, who was Korean, has not been found.

They said: "Early morning on June 8, a 63-year-old Korean female guest went overboard while the ship was sailing from Cannes, France to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

"As soon as the report was made, the authorities were notified and a search and rescue operation ensued.

"The search has now ceased, and sadly, the guest has not been found.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual's family during this difficult time.”

Witnesses had initially reported that the female passenger was a 'girl in pink pyjamas.'

One passenger on the ship tweeted: "Just saw a news story that the missing passenger is a 63-year-old Korean woman.

"My earlier tweet saying she is an American teenager was apparently wrong.

"I have no contrary information or reason not to believe the new information and apologize for sharing misinformation."

She added that thousands of passengers had aided the search, but that incoming bad weather had meant the search was being called off.
