Search for missing girls, 16, who both vanished on camping trip in the woods

Two 16-year-old girls have been missing since vanishing four days ago while on a camping trip in the woods.

Maya Mirota and Marta Malek disappeared on Thursday night on a trail in Algonquin Park, Ontario, police said.

They are believed to have been on their way to meet up with the rest of their camping group, but never arrived.

Neither of the girls had a phone with them, CBC reports.

A major search to find the teenagers is underway with police, the Ontario Search and Rescue Association, and park wardens all at work.

The pair, from Kitchener, have been described as 'experienced campers'.

Ontario Provincial Police spokesman Bill Dickson said: "They're not strangers to the woods, they do have some experience.

"They had a tent, they had some other equipment and they had some supplies — enough to last them a day or two.

"So we're hoping that they were able to tide things over, and we are confident we are going to find these girls alive."

Mr Dickson said the trail is 'well worn' but added that if you left the trail you would end up in dense forest.

He said in that situation it could be hard to find the trail again.
