Road sign in Cardiff sends traffic in opposite directions

You had one job! Road sign in Cardiff sends traffic in opposite directions depending on whether drivers read the English or Welsh translation

  • The sign on Clare Road, Cardiff, is causing a lot of confusion for motorists
  • Road has one way system in place but opposing signs are leading to traffic chaos

A road traffic sign in Cardiff is sending traffic in opposite directions, depending on whether drivers read the English or Welsh translation.

The sign on Clare Road is causing chaos in the Welsh capital, with the direction of traffic being changed to one way due to road works.

The road, at the end of Pendyris Street is currently one way, with motorists travelling from eastbound able to pass.

The new system is confirmed in the English version of the sign, which reads: ‘Pendyris Street one way ahead eastbound only’.

But the Welsh version reads: ‘Pendyris Street unffordd tua’r gorllewin yn unig’ which, translated into English, states: ‘Pendyris Street one way westbound only’.

The gaff was first brought to light on Twitter, with BBC Wales journalist Dafydd Morgan posting an image and writing: ‘Pendyris Street’s one way system lets you choose your direction of travel based on your choice of language’.

Cardiff Council took to social media to thank members of the public for flagging the mistake, writing that ‘the relevant department is aware and this will be corrected as soon as possible’.

According to reports, the sign at the western end of the road will be removed and replaced with a ‘no entry sign’, and sign on the eastern sign will be replaced with one that states the new layout is ‘one way’.
