Police offer £50k for missing mum 'murdered over secret relationship'

Police offer £50,000 to find body of missing mother feared to have been murdered for having secret relationship with man

  • Hadir Al-Enezi, 26, disappeared in 2019 and police fear she was murdered
  • Greater Manchester Police warns her would-be killers: ‘We’re not going away’

Police probing the disappearance of a mother in 2019 are offering a reward for her body – amid fears that she was murdered for having a secret relationship with a man who was not the father of her child.

Hadir Al-Enezi, 26 – previously named as Hadir Al-Anizi – has been the subject of a missing person investigation since 2019 after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) was tipped off to her disappearance.

Officers received a phone call from a refugee camp in Greece suggesting that they investigate an address in Manchester where Ms Al-Enezi had lived with her daughter.

While the youngster was traced shortly afterwards in London, Ms Al-Enezi has never been found – and GMP detectives are pursuing the devastating theory that the divorced mother was killed for striking up a secret relationship with another man.

On Saturday, the force announced that it would offer a £50,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to the discovery of Ms Al-Enezi’s body, and vowed to her would-be killers: ‘This investigation isn’t going away.’

The Manchester Evening News reports that police are treating the theory she was killed for disgracing her community seriously, despite denials from within her own family.

Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hopkinson, of the force’s major incident team, told the paper: ‘I would say that if Hadir has been killed it is by somebody who is known to her or by someone connected.

‘If this is a murder, someone is willing to murder, without a second thought, a young woman, and mum of a little girl, for me that is someone who really does not have a concern for people or life.’

Ms Al-Enezi and her daughter came to the UK in 2018 as refugees from Kuwait via Greece.

Both are members of the Bidoon Arab minority, who are deemed stateless and cannot access basic services in Kuwait, and are not wanted in neighbouring Iraq.

The hypothesis that she was killed for disgracing her culture has been dismissed by her parents, who are reported to have told police they would have known if their daughter had been in trouble.

But police say other theories – including the idea that she abandoned her daughter and returned to Greece – simply don’t hold water.

An insistent DCI Hopkinson told the MEN: ‘I want people to come forward and tell me where the body is.’

Over the course of four years police have spoken to more than 20 members of Ms Al-Enezi’s family in Greece and Sweden in a bid to piece together what happened to her. Her marriage is understood to have ended before she came to the UK.

Detectives believe the answer lies somewhere within either the local communities of Manchester or in her extended family.

Leaflets are being written in Arabic – including in regional dialects – to be distributed among locals.

In a statement issued by GMP on Saturday, DCI Hopkinson said the hypothesis remains that Ms Al-Enezi was ‘murdered in a targeted attack’.

She added: ‘Throughout our investigation we have worked tirelessly as a team to find her, and we’ve still not been able to find any proof that Hadir is still alive, and we sadly continue this investigation on the hypothesis that she is not and has come to serious harm.

‘We need to find answers for Hadir’s little girl and it is vital that anyone with information or her whereabouts comes forward to police so that we can give her young daughter the answers she deserves.

‘We need to find Hadir’s body, and anyone who has any information is asked to share this with GMP as a matter of urgency, it may be key to helping us find answers for her daughter.’

She vowed: ‘This investigation isn’t going away and we won’t stop. Investigations like this don’t just close and we are determined to find Hadir and investigate any crimes committed thoroughly.

‘Information passed onto us will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence and you can also do this anonymously.’
