Police investigating the disappearance of a missing grandmother have launched a murder inquiry after she vanished just weeks before her daughter was due to give birth.
Naheed Khan was last seen on May 3 2018 in Stockton-on-Tees and was reported missing by her family nine days later, on May 12.
Police have now revealed that they believe the grandmother may have come to ‘serious harm’, as she has not been in touch with neither friends nor family, despite the birth of her first grandchild.
At a press conference today which was also attended by Naheed’s family, detective chief superintendent Jon Green of Cleveland Police said: ‘She has not accessed her bank accounts, not used her mobile phone, and does not have a passport.
‘Whilst there is no tangible evidence that a crime has been committed, there is nevertheless no proof of her being alive. In my professional judgement I believe she has come to serious harm. I have therefore formally classified the case as one of suspected murder.’
Forensic officers are set to return to Naheed’s property in Thornaby to conduct additional scientific investigations and plan to carry out over 300 house to house inquiries across Stockton and Middlesbrough.
Earlier today two areas of land were also being searched, in relation to the investigation.

Heartbroken Amber, Naheed’s daughter, said: ‘My mother is my best friend. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of her and imagine talking to her and telling her how much I love her.
‘I gave birth to my daughter eight months ago and it still does not feel real that my own mother is not here and has not met her.
‘My mother is funny, kind and beautiful.
Amber also said that on the weekends leading up to her mother’s disappearance, that the pair would binge watch Netflix together.

‘We did everything together. She was there throughout all of my pregnancy until she went missing. She loved me very much and she would be besotted by her baby granddaughter.
‘The most important person in my life has gone. I love and miss my mother more than words could ever describe and I hope people with information find it in their hearts to come forward and give assistance to the police.’
Gazala Khan, Naheed’s mother, said through tears: ‘Naheed is loved beyond measure by us all. She is generous and kind. She would give you her last penny even if that left her with nothing.

‘She has big brown eyes, amazingly shiny hair and a dazzling smile.
‘She is quietly spoken with a shy demeanour. People often think she is much younger than she is as she possesses a girl like vulnerability.’
Mrs Khan added that this behaviour was ‘totally out of character’ for her daughter and said she comes from a ‘very supportive family, where the door is always open.’
‘We are appealing for any information that can allow our family to gain closure on this matter.
‘Somebody, somewhere must have some information that can pin point Naheed’s last movements so we as a family can stop speculating over what we can only imagine is a tragic outcome.
‘Naheed was a very important person to us. We feel she must be suffering terribly not to come home and our family has been left a wound that won’t heal.
‘As a family we are not seeking justice, just answers to find our lovely Naheed.’
Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Green of Cleveland Police added: ‘Naheed had links in Stockton, Middlesbrough and Thornaby.
‘Naheed is Asian, of slim build and around 5ft 6’ tall, with long, dark hair.
‘I would specifically like to hear from anyone who knows Naheed who we have not yet spoken to, or people who we have spoken to who may have further information.
‘I would urge them to end the suffering of Naheed’s family and come forward or report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 in complete confidence.
‘Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, should contact us on the non-emergency number 101 and tell us it is about Naheed.’
