Mum’s ‘horrible’ name for baby with two unfortunate meanings divides parents

As much as you may love your choice of baby name at the time, there’s always a danger it may not age well.

There’s also a chance that it will come back into fashion, but this isn’t always a guarantee.

After all, ‘Nigel’ has sadly been languishing on the endangered list for quite some time now.

So you can’t blame one mum-to-be for testing the waters with a baby name she loves. While some people agreed with her and thought it was "lovely", others described it as "horrible".

Explaining a little bit about her background on Reddit , she wrote: "My fiancé and I are international/intercultural  -he’s Indonesian and Dutch, and I’m Dutch and American, which means that whatever names we choose need to sound good in each of our languages.

"Many of the traditional English names I love are no-goes for this reason, because they sound beautiful in one language and awful in another."

With this in mind, she and her partner have settled on ‘Vesper’.

But she has her doubts about the name too…

The mum-to-be then adds: "First, it’s pretty modern (it’s the name of the Roman demigod of the evening star, but it was only brought into modern use in the last 20 years due James Bond character Vesper Lynd) so I’m worried it might age poorly.

"Another factor to consider is that my partner’s last name begins with a V. If she gets only his name, she’ll be Vesper Vernon. Is this too much? If she takes both our names, she’d be Vesper Walker Vernon."

The feedback came in thick and fast.

“Too close to vespa meaning wasp in Italian,” one woman responded.

"In German, colloquially, Vesper means a late afternoon snack or dinner. I realise, you can’t mind every translation in every language, but since German is pretty close to Dutch, is there maybe a similar meaning in Dutch?" another pointed out.

"AHAHAHAHAHA OH MY GOD NO THIS IS HORRIBLE," added one sensitive soul.

Happily, the mum-to-be has a contingency plan, and reveals she also likes the names "Hannah, Philippa (Pip), and Caroline."

Maybe go with one of those?
