Mum 'pounded cat against a table and snapped its NECK' in front of her sobbing kids

Ariane Borg, 38, faces charges of child abuse and animal torture for the alleged attack.

Borg's 10-year-old daughter told the police that her mother would go "crazy" nearly every night.

The cat was held by its legs and pounded "repeatedly" on the table before Borg snapped its neck, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The girl tried to save the cat but was beaten away by her mum, leaving her with a "large bruise" on her arm.

Her 17-year-old son and the daughter were said to be crying hysterically when police found the dead cat in the home in America on September 15, 2018.

Borg was also found suffering from multiple "self-inflicted stab wounds" in her abdomen and wrists.

Blood and broken items were spread around the chaotic home in Holladay, Utah, according to police.

Borg was arrested and charged on January 17.

Her lawyer Steven Burton said she had spent her life battling depressiong and that her medication had been changed in July.

He added: "Ariane suffered a critical manic episode. She believed that she and her family were being attacked and she injured herself and a beloved family pet while suffering from those delusions.

"Luckily, she did not end her own life, but spent several days in the hospital and multiple weeks being treated for her injuries and illness."

Borg was held at Salt Lake City Jail and her bail was set at $100,000.
