This is the horrifying moment a death-defying circus stunt goes wrong as three motorcyclists crash into each other.

The video shows the fearless daredevils speeding inside a small, spherical metal enclosure known as the ‘cage of death’.

But, as the crowd full of children watched on in amazement, one of the riders misjudged their turn and clipped the wheel of their partner.

All three flew off their bikes and ended up in a heap at the bottom of the cage as circus staff sprinted towards the enclosure to try to free them.

The stunned crowd can be heard gasping in horror before an announcer asks for everyone to leave the premises.

A circus official took to Facebook yesterday to say one of the riders, a woman called Glennis, suffered a broken ankle in the crash.

The video was taken by Vicky Ferry, 41, who went to see Gandeys Circus at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, Merseyside, with her six-year-old son Alex on Saturday February 23.

Vicky said: ‘As they were going round they were really, really fast and close to each other.

‘All of a sudden one of them sped up and hit the one in front so they all ended up crashing into each other.

‘Two of them fell on top of a woman rider and so did their bikes.

‘Everyone in the crowd was dumbstruck, people were screaming and lots of kids started crying.

‘You could see it was bad and the announcer told everyone to leave straight away.

‘All the staff there rushed out from behind the curtain towards the cage to try and help the riders.

‘It looked like they couldn’t life the bikes off because they were stuck in the cage.

‘My son was asking ‘what’s happened?’ and my friend’s little boy was really upset by it.’

Vicky said there was due to be one more act after the ‘cage of death’ but that the show was ended after the incident.

A paramedic in the crowd ran on to the stage to offer his assistance, witnesses reported.

It emerged yesterday that the riders were using replacement motorbikes after thieves cut through fencing and stole the specialist vehicles normally used for the act.
