Mexican tycoon likely won’t face charges for boat trip that killed son

The wealthy Mexican tycoon who was arrested after his 11-year-old son died in a California boating accident likely won’t face charges, according to a report.

Javier Burillo, 57, was released Monday from Marion County Jail on $1 million bail, though no charges have been filed in the fatal boat trip, news station KPIX reported.

Due to an agreement with prosecutors, his lawyer, Douglas Horngrad, said charges are not expected in the case.

“Given the facts as I know them, I expect no charges will be filed in this tragic horrible accident,” Horngrad told the station.

The Belvedere father was piloting the boat over the weekend in the San Francisco Bay when his two sons were ejected by a wave near Angel Island, according to the Tiburon Police Department.

He was able to get the sons, ages 11 and 27, back on board and to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, where the younger son died, officials said.

The older son remained hospitalized Monday night with injuries to his leg, authorities said.

Burillo — who also goes by Javier Burillo Azcarraga — was arrested Sunday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. He also was suspected of operating a boat while under the influence and willful harm or injury to a child.
