Massive dam collapses in Brazil killing at least seven with hundreds missing
Hundreds of people are missing after a massive dam burst causing catastrophic damage to a city in Brazil.
At least seven people have died and 150 are missing after the disaster near Belo Horizonte.
The dam, controlled by Vale mining company, broke on Friday in the early afternoon.
According to the fire service and the civil defense corp, residents living in the lower part of the city have been removed from their houses.
Dramatic images show a woman covered completely in mud being rescued by helicopter emergency crew.
Local hospitals are on standby to receive the wounded.
Houses in Brumandinho, in the state of Minas Gerais, have been evacuated.
Photos and video of the area show the devastating mud slide that has engulfed the area.
The rupture is believed to have occurred in the Córrego do Feijão Mine.
The area is used for disposing of mining waste.
Emergency alerts have been issued by the local authority and the fire department urging people to leave and those living near the Paraopeba river to urgently vacate their homes.
Vale has confirmed the major environmental disaster and issued a statement: "Vale’s overall priority right now is to preserve and protect the lives of employees and members of the community.”
This breaking disaster comes just three years after the dam owned by mining company Samarco burst in Mariana, in the same state.
It caused the biggest environmental disaster leaving 19 dead and dozens homeless.
The mining firm belongs to Vale and BHP Billiton company.
