Going on holiday? Brits love to take their tea bags… half of holidaymakers like to take a box of their favourite brew with them whenever they go abroad

But Brits forget obvious things -including suncream, sunglasses and toiletries

Nearly half of British holidaymakers take their own tea bags abroad with them, while 36 per cent insist on taking slippers, according to a new survey.

A study has discovered the creature comforts Brits must bring along, with tea bags (43 per cent), slippers (36 per cent) and decent coffee (35 per cent) topping our packing lists.

A quarter (25 per cent) regularly pack their own pillow, with one in ten even insisting on taking their favourite mug.

And bizarrely, air freshener (9 per cent), washing up gloves (7 per cent) and water filter jugs (4 per cent), made the list, with 41 per cent packing such items ‘just in case’.

A further one in three (33 per cent) like to make sure they have their favourite food and snacks, in case they cannot get hold of the same things in foreign supermarkets.

But Brits forget some obvious things when heading off into the sunset, with suncream (21 per cent), phone chargers (20 per cent), sunglasses (20 per cent), travel adaptors (17 per cent) and toiletries (17 per cent) all making the list

More than one in 20 (7 per cent) have forgotten prescription medicine or even to update their passport (7 per cent).

Despite starting to pack a week (46 per cent) or a day (23 per cent) before the holiday, we forget an average of two essential items every time we go abroad.

A third (33 per cent) would describe themselves as overpackers, cramming as much as possible in their luggage just to be on the safe side, while one in four (24 per cent) organise everything into day and activity type. Some 19 per cent confess they pack at the last minute.

Nearly four in ten (39 per cent) have had to pay extra at the airport because their luggage was too heavy, with 37 per cent of people saying they have had to remove items from their bags before jetting off.

The worry that you might have forgotten something (23 per cent) is one of the most stressful parts of the holiday, topped only by ensuring you arrive at the airport on time (27 per cent), according to those surveyed.

Nic Moran, from travel money and insurance provider M&S Bank, which commissioned the survey of 2,000 people, said: ‘Planning a holiday is an exciting time and even though many of us will have been thinking about our next break for quite some time, it is still easy to forget certain things.

‘It sounds simple, but making a list of everything you intend to take or sort pre-trip – paying particular attention to your passport if travelling abroad, along with tickets, travel money and insurance – can ensure that you’re well prepared and can spend more time relaxing on your getaway, when it comes around.’
