Girl, 4, dies after being accidentally stabbed through the neck by brother, 14, as he cooked breakfast

A TEEN cooking breakfast in Hawaii has accidentally stabbed his four-year-old sister through the neck, killing her.

The boy, 14, was preparing the meal with Kayla-Marie Kehaulani Mainaaupo and another brother when the fatality occurred, say police.



Their parents were away, at work, at the time of the kitchen stabbing on November 27.

Media in Hawaii are describing the Big Island's girl's death as a "tragic cooking incident".

A  neighbour had tried to resuscitate Kayla-Marie by performing CPR.

Paramedics rushed her to Hilo Medical Center, but she died from her injuries, said Hawaii News Now.

Following an autopsy, the medical examiner said that Kayla-Marie's "cause of death was determined to be a stab wound".

The official also "ruled that the manner of death as accidental".

Hawaii News Today reported that police had launched a manslaughter investigation soon after the girl's passing.

Cops initially took her brother into custody, but he was released to Child Protective Services after being questioned.

The teen has since been reunited with his grieving family, and no charges have been laid.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family, surpassing its $5,000 target.

It says: "We are asking for help to cover the cost of Kayla's memorial service and also to help her family get through the [Christmas] holidays."

One person who donated commented: "Prayers to your entire family for the tragic loss of your little angel.

"I cannot imagine the pain you are going through."
