A rare ‘still tidal wave’ spanning the entire mouth of a river has been caught on video.
Footage of a seemingly unmoving wave, said to have been caused by heavy rain, was captured by Dee Ackland at Shaldon on the River Teign, Devon.
The strange phenomenon spanned the whole width of the river near its estuary with the English Channel.

The video reportedly shows brown fresh water flowing down stream towards the river mouth being held in place by an incoming tide of sea water.
It was described as being similar – but opposite – to a tidal bore that takes place when a wave of incoming water travels up stream against the river flow.
Ms Ackland said: ‘There was a wave moving down river that spanned the whole width and bringing red water down with it.

‘I’d never seen that before.’
Another local explained: ‘It’s where the salt water on the rising tide is holding back the fresh muddy water from the river.
‘As the tide goes out it becomes a ”bubble” of river water.
‘It’s strange that it seems to take a long time for the fresh and salt water to mix and the edge is very sharply defined usually with a little bit if rough water on the join.’
