Freezing rain warning downgraded to freezing drizzle advisory for Guelph, Waterloo region

Environment Canada has replaced a freezing rain warning with a freezing drizzle advisory for the Guelph area and Waterloo region.

The area had been under a freezing rain warning for most of the day on Wednesday, but the agency downgraded the statement at around 3 p.m.

Environment Canada is still calling for freezing drizzle in the area Wednesday night and into Thursday.

The agency said temperatures will rise above zero and the precipitation will change to rain or drizzle.

“Challenging winter travelling conditions are expected today through Thursday due to the prolonged period of icing,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

Surfaces such as highways, roads and walkways and parking lots were coated in ice, causing slippery conditions.

Wednesday’s system caused several closures and cancellations in Guelph and Waterloo region.
