The 49-year-old was rushed to New York Downtown Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Around 4am, three more victims were found along East Broadway, just three blocks away from where the first two victims were found.
All three men were pronounced dead at the scene.
A short time later, police arrested a 24-year-old man who was wielding a metal object in the vicinity of the last three murders.
Authorities described the metal object as resembling a pipe.
Police said the suspect is also believed to be homeless.
Authorities requested that officers in three separate lower Manhattan precincts search the entirety of their patrols for any additional victims.
The investigation is ongoing and the NYPD’s Homeless Outreach unit is also working the crime scenes.
