Family returns from trip to find stranger living in home, locks changed: cops
A Georgia family says they got an unwelcome surprise when they returned from a trip and allegedly discovered a stranger had changed the locks of their home.
Janice Henson said she was shocked to be greeted at the door of her Cobb County home Jan. 2 by a disabled man who told her to leave, news station WSB-TV reported.
The man, identified by officials as 26-year-old Nathaniel Nuckols, allegedly told the family he lived in the home and now it belonged to him. It’s unclear how long Nuckols had been squatting in the Hensons’ home, officials said.
The homeowners contacted 911 and a SWAT team was brought in to get Nuckols out of the home.
After a five-hour standoff, the authorities were able to ram down the door and use a robot to locate the suspect, who was in a wheelchair.
Officers arrested Nuckols early Thursday on charges of burglary, terroristic threats and obstruction.
Henson said when the family was allowed back inside their home, they discovered bizarre notes and all of their food missing.
“He also left us notes thanking us for the key and thanking us for letting him live here, and it was his house now,” Henson told WSB-TV. “He moved all the pictures, emptied drawers. He was making this house his.”
The alleged squatter is being held at Cobb County Jail on $33,220 bond.
