Els Enfarinats revellers pelt each others with flour, eggs and firecrackers while taking part in ancient Spanish festival

The Els Enfarinats festival takes place every year in Ibi, Alicante and dates back more than 200 years.

As part of the tradition, a group don military clothing and stage a mock coup, declaring new rules on the small town.

The new regime then collect fines from residents who fall foul of their guidelines.

Once the money has been collected it is donated to local charities.

The residents then restore order by overthrowing their military masters in a messy battle involving hundreds of eggs, kilos of flour and firecrackers.

Incredible pictures from the festival today show locals with painted faces smashing eggs over each other heads.

Clouds of white flours are contrasted with bright red flares as the town in southern Spain briefly descends into light-hearted anarchy.

Held every December 28, the food fight is part of the festivities to mark the Day of Innocents, a Christian feast day remembering the Biblical story of King Herod killing children.
