‘Damaging winds’ expected across southern Ontario on Sunday

A special weather statement is in effect for all of southern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued the statement Friday morning, ahead of a weather event expected to begin on Sunday.

Officials say damaging wind gusts up to 110 km/h are expected to develop Sunday afternoon across the province.

Environment Canada says areas near the Great Lakes are more likely to experience winds at the higher end of the range.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” the weather statement reads. “Power outages are also possible.”

The strong winds will persist through Sunday night and gradually weaken on Monday.

The weather agency says some areas could see freezing rain ahead of the wind gusts on Saturday.

Some regions could also see flurries and blowing snow on Sunday afternoon.

Officials say between five and 10 cm of snow is possible by Monday morning in some areas.

Environment Canada says travel may become hazardous as the fresh snow is whipped up by the strong winds, causing reduced visibility and white-out conditions.

Officials also warn that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery.

According to Environment Canada, there is still some uncertainty regarding the track of this low-pressure system originating in Texas.
