Cops think alligator killed man found in South Carolina pond

A man found dead in a South Carolina pond may have been attacked by an alligator, according to cops.

The mauled body was found on Saturday by a police helicopter searching a pond behind the unidentified man’s home in Kiawah Island six hours after he went missing.

The victim had “bite marks and wounds consistent in appearance with an alligator,” Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

An autopsy is planned to show if he was killed by a gator — or if he was bitten after he died, according to The Post and Courier.

The victim first went missing at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the helicopter called in to search the large pond behind his home after police dogs failed to find him, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies are now working with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to investigate.

It would be the third fatality in South Carolina from a gator attack, according to The Post and Courier — and less than a year after former New York kindergarten teacher Cassandra Cline, 45, died while saving her dog.

In July 2016, a 90-year-old woman with dementia, Bonnie Walker, was killed after wandering from her senior living home.
