This is the shocking moment dozens of nitrogen-filled balloons suddenly exploded, injuring four people standing underneath them during a religious show.

The bizarre explosion happened at Suttur in Karnataka, India on February 5 during a popular annual fair.

The fair was organised by a monastery representing lingayats, a powerful community in South India.

The religious head of the monastery, Sri Deshikendra Swamiji, was scheduled to wave a flag to start a wrestling competition as part of the fair.

His followers stood behind him holding the balloons, which were inflated with nitrogen – ready to release them as soon as he signalled the start of the competition.

But the plan went haywire as the balloons caught fire from a torch, which had been brought in as part of the ceremony, and exploded.

Four people, including the Swamiji, received minor injuries in the blast.

Speaking afterwards, he said: ‘I have received minor burns in my forehead. Luckily, none of us are seriously injured. 

‘The fair will proceed as planned.’
