What the F*ck You Just Watched: Netflix's 'Daybreak'

Lately, it feels like every show has us thinking, “What the fuck did I just watch?” In this series, we will break down exactly what happened in all those wild, mind-bendy, and just plain strange shows…in a way that’s much easier to understand than the actual episodes.

There are spoilers for the first episode of Daybreak ahead.

If you were anything other than the most popular girl in your high school, your 9th-12th grade experience was probably a little rough. But what happens when you suddenly have to exist as a high schooler in a post-apocalyptic world? With no adults? And a barren wasteland for a town? That’s basically the entire premise of Netflix’s new show Daybreak, which, admittedly, is a pretty WTF concept.

Full disclosure, I didn’t watch the entire first season of Daybreak. But I did watch enough to tell you whether you should continue past the first episode or not, and I’m going to tell you how I came to that conclusion… right now.

The show starts pretty simply enough—a kid named Josh introduces himself as an average high schooler. But as he’s talking, the school transforms into a wasteland, and you quickly learn that Josh survived a nuclear attack, along with a bunch of other teenagers.

Basically, everyone over the age of 18 is now gone, except for those who were transformed into zombie-like creatures who constantly repeat the last thing they thought, like “I really should buy more Lululemon pants.” The youths are running the show, picking their own homes, and fighting each other to the literal death.

As the episode progresses, we learn that Josh is actually looking for a girl named Sam Dean, who he has a major crush on. He hasn’t seen her in the six months since the explosion. Two other classmates (not friends) help him continue searching for her, and the episode ends on a major cliffhanger during their quest.

The cons of the episode:

So, should you keep watching?

My answer is a tentative yes. I will say that the cliffhanger at the end of episode 1 did get me to click into episode 2, but Daybreak has to show me some real emotion if I’m going to finish the season. It’s pretty outrageous, so if that’s your thing, you’ll love it. Again, kids with no parents! What more could you want?
