Brenda Blethyn has been playing DCI Vera Stanhope since the British drama series inauguration back in 2011. With her quick wit and no-nonsense attitude, Vera has earned herself immense popularity. Not only do her one-liners make her iconic, but her reoccurring rain mac and bucket hat which feature in every scene have become a firm staple for the show. But why does the detective have to wear the hat in all weathers?

TV’s cleverest detective, Vera is a character created by novelist Ann Cleeves.

Throughout the years, she has been spotted huffing around Northumberland, wearing seemingly endless layers of shoeless blouses and an old scruffy mac.

To top off her statement look, she adds a battered fishing hat.

“She’s definitely not interested in labels,” Brenda revealed when discussing her character’s sense of style.

“I reckon maybe someone in her village has a catalogue and that’s where she gets her clothes from.”

While some may think she is just a woman who is stuck in her ways, there is a reason as to why Vera always dons the hat.

“In the books she has a skin condition and doesn’t like going in the sun.

“The hat I wear is a wink towards that.”

And if fans thought Vera had a big budget for the costume department, they were wrong.

It is in fact Brenda herself who finds this gems.

“I bought it [the hat] in a fishing tackle shop in Newcastle,” she added.

So why is Vera so popular and why do fans find her nature so endearing?

I think women of a certain age all over the world like the fact that Vera’s in charge of a load of men,” Brenda revealed.

“And part of the appeal is the fact that she isn’t manufactured. She’s a real person. There’s no vanity there,” the actress continued during an interview with Daily Mail.

Every year, ITV delight fans with a brand new series.

But it seems they will have to wait a few months before the 11th instalment arrives.

At the Winter Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour, Brenda said: “We’re going to start working this year and you’ll see it [season 11] next year.”

Vera’s executive producer Phil Hunter then added: “Yes, there’ll be more Vera beyond series 10, which is fantastic news.”

Vera airs this evening at 8pm on ITV.
