This Morning fans ‘pick out’ Phillip Schofield replacement as favourite returns

This Morning fans have made it clear they want Dermot O’Leary to get the show’s presenting gig full-time.

Dermot returned to the hit programme on Monday (June 19) for another week on the sofa alongside Holly Willoughby, who lost her permanent co-presenter when Phillip Schofield sensationally quit ITV following revelations that he’d lied about an affair with a young runner on the show.

When Phillip quit, under-fire ITV bosses announced they’d be using a number of presenters while they made a decision on a permanent replacement – but now former X Factor star Dermot has been flooded with messages from viewers telling him they want him to get the job.

Holly, 42, had co-hosted alongside Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle during her first week back on this show after the scandal blew up, but was later reunited with Dermot in the studio as they presented alongside each other for the first time in almost a decade.

At the start of this week’s run of shows, Dermot, 50, posted a picture of Holly and him on Instagram. He captioned it: “Back on This Morning for another week with my lovely mate Holly."

That was the cue for fans to let them know what they thought of the pairing.

“Please make this a permanent pairing,” wrote one fan, while another said: "Holly couldn’t ask for a better male co-presenter."

Another poster said: “You are fabulous Dermot and very funny. True professional x.”

Someone else simply added: “Please keep Dermot!”

Rumours of a massive bust-up at This Morning swirled around when the scandal engulfed Phillip.

He and Holly had had one of television’s closest on-screen partnerships but it was reported that Holly felt betrayed by Phillip’s lies, putting an end to their friendship.

The 61-year-old admitted that as well as having an affair with the much younger man who worked on the show, he’d then lied to Holly and his other colleagues when he’d been quizzed about it.

Other messages of support for Team Holly & Dermot came from one fan, who said: "I think this is THE new pairing! You're a delight together; fun, funny, cool, and caring."

And another wrote: "The man for the job.”
