Selena Quintanilla series on Netflix announced, cast and release date yet to be revealed
Teasing Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Netflix has revealed a new series about the life of the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla — and her fans can’t wait. Selena’s family is on board with the project, with some even serving as executive producers.
The newest Netflix scripted series will tell the story of a young Selena, as she worked to make her dream of being a singing star a reality. The coming of age story will show just how hard she worked and how much her family sacrificed to make this dream come true.
“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”
Moises Zamora, known for his work on Star and American Crime, has been tapped to executive produce and write the series. While Jennifer Lopez played the singer in a 1997 biopic, it’s not been revealed who will play her in Selena The Series on Netflix.
In 1995, Selena Quintanilla was shot and killed by her former fan club president Yolanda Saldivar in Corpus Christi, Texas. Saldivar was meeting with Selena at a Days Inn motel to hand over financial records for the fan club, but instead she pulled out a revolver and shot the Tejano singer dead.
Though it was not televised, the Latino community watched Yolanda Saldivar’s trial closely. While Saldivar maintained that the gun went off accidentally, the evidence against her was damning and the former fan club president was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Saldivar will be eligible for parole in 2025.
It has been more than two decades since Selena’s death but she is still well remembered by her family and her fans. With hits like Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Como la Flor and I Could Fall In Love, Selena was a star and she was on her way to becoming a worldwide sensation when her life was senselessly cut short.
Netflix has not yet revealed a release date for Selena The Series.
