Roy gets new companion after Melvyn's death in Corrie

Roy Cropper (David Neilson) lost one friend and gained another in recent Coronation Street scenes, as he was left to care for puppy Freddie following the shock death of friend Melvyn.

Melvyn arrived in the café ahead of an exciting bat spotting trip with good friend Roy with little dog Freddie in tow.

Roy expressed his concerns that Freddie may frighten the bats away, but Melvyn insisted that he had to come with them, as he couldn’t be left alone.

With no one else available to look after the pup, all three of them headed out for their day trip.

A little while later Roy and Freddie returned, but their was no sign of Melvyn.

Roy informed a confused Shona Platt and Nina Lucas (Julia Goulding and Mollie Gallagher) that Melvyn had had a funny turn in the car, and had been taken to hospital.

When he pointed out that he couldn’t put Freddie down without him barking, Shona said that they’d better hope Melvyn made a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be.

Roy was later informed that Melvyn had died in hospital, leaving him to look after poor Freddie, who was already missing his owner.

Having already approached Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) about taking him in for a few days, Roy had no choice but to care for him himself after she refused.

In upcoming episodes, Roy will be left with a decision to make over whether or not to keep Freddie, or have him rehomed elsewhere.

When he finally decides to drop Freddie off at a dogs home, Evelyn is furious.

Ultimately, he decides to keep the dog, much to her relief, but will he be able to cope with a new pet?
