Red row erupts: Caroline Flint warns voters SICK of Corbyn ‘cult of personality’ politics

Caroline Flint lost her core Labour seat in Doncaster after 22 years last week and has since hit out at Labour MPs who are in the running to be the next leader of the party. ITV Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan asked: “You looked quite emotional yesterday, you’re holding it together today but underneath you’re very wounded and sad about this. How do you feel personally about losing your job and seat in Parliament over something that was out of your control?”

Speaking on GMB, Ms Flint said: “I’m sad because when you’ve been an MP for 22 years, I’m here as a resident not just an MP and you build up relationships.

“I’ve met so many people and tried to help them in different ways, of course it’s sad.

“It’s a bit like a bereavement in some ways but my saddest moments I suppose are about what’s happened with the Labour party in the past few years.

“In pursuit of certain types of policies and the Brexit strategy, we have clearly put a distance between ourselves and our core Labour vote.”

Ms Flint then clashed with Labour’s former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who was also appearing on the ITV breakfast show.

She accused the former MP of being in “denial” over the reasons Labour suffered such a devastating defeat in the election as she railed against the “cult of personality” politics dominating the Labour Party under Mr Corbyn.

Mr Livingstone also engaged in a furious spat with outspoken host Mr Morgan.

After discussing Labour leader Corbyn apologising for anti-Semitism in the party recently, Mr Morgan attacked Mr Livingstone’s past.

He said: “You yourself even quit the Labour party after talking about Hitler and Zionism. After you talking about Naz Shah, who you said was not antisemitic.”

Beginning to raise his voice, Morgan pointed: “Even when it’s staring you in the face with Naz Shah over antisemitism. You don’t see it when it’s staring you in the face!”

Livingstone was adamant he was wrong, however, as he instantly hit back: “If all the things you said were true, yes!”

Morgan shouted: “You said it wasn’t anti-Semitism!”

Livingstone viciously hit back: “No that wasn’t what I said!

“I’ve put up with 40 years of smears and lies. I’ve had this for 40 years.”

Ms Flint’s latest intervention came after she was embroiled in a row with shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry over claims the Corbyn ally descried voters in the north “stupid”.

Ms Thornberry, who is believed to be eyeing a bid to succeed Mr Corbyn, was forced to deny the “total and utter lie” on Sunday and was understood to be consulting lawyers.

Ms Flint, who lost her seat in the former stronghold of Don Valley during the catastrophic election for Labour, claimed Ms Thornberry had told a colleague: “I’m glad my constituents aren’t as stupid as yours.”

The row came as shadow chancellor John McDonnell tried to take the flak for the defeat, saying “I own this disaster”, and as Mr Corbyn also apologised for Labour’s worst result since 1935.
