A huge actor has been tipped to portray Phillip Schofield in a television drama about the scandals which have rocked This Morning.

The bookmakers have shared the frontrunner who could play the 61-year-old in the rumoured series and it is none other than Happy Valley star James Norton.

James, 38, is also one of the bookies’ favourites to play the next James Bond.

The actor, who is perhaps best known for playing killer Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley, has been placed at 4/1 by BoyleSports to play Phillip.

He’s closely followed by Michael Sheen who has impersonated a wealth of figures in biopics, including Kenneth Williams and Tony Blair.

Steve Pemberton has been placed at 7/1 while Doctor Who star David Tennant currently sits at 8/1, and Line of Duty star Martin Compston is at 9/1.

BoyleSports Lawrence Lyons told The Metro: “The make-up department would have to add a few years to James Norton, but we reckon he could turn his hand to anything and we’d expect a blockbuster name to be the star of the show.”

Phillip stepped down from This Morning earlier this year after two decades hosting the ITV programme. He admitted he’d had an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a much younger male colleague.

While there are no official plans for a TV show, according to The Sun, a series about the affair and Phillip’s exit from This Morning is already in the works.

A statement from him said: “I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers at ITV, to my colleagues and friends, to my agents, to the media and therefore the public and most importantly of all to my family.

“I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.”

He told the BBC: “What am I going to do with my days? I see nothing ahead of me but blackness, and sadness, and regret, and remorse, and guilt.

“I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently.”

His longtime co-host Holly Willoughby has continued to present the show alongside other stars such as Alison Hammond, Josie Gibson and Dermot O’Leary.

Phillip no longer follows Holly on social media and neither do his children.

The television duo, who have won multiple National Television Awards together, used to be close friends.

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITVX.
