Pack of Lies stars and writers ‘ready’ to work on second season

The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies might not be a one-and-done drama for the BBC.

At the show’s launch in London, Home’s Rebekah Staton and Sex Education’s Alistair Petrie were present, along with sibling writers Penelope and Ginny Skinner.

Staton and Petrie portray estranged couple Alice and Rob, whose marriage ended when the latter swindled her family out of all their money, walked out for a takeaway, and never returned.

Over a decade later, Alice spots her ex on the street and discovers he’s now masquerading as a charitable academic and explorer and becomes determined to put a stop to Rob’s latest con.

“Yes, the desire is there to do it and the wherewithal [is there] to do it,” Petrie said of a second season.

“I also know for a fact – and I certainly don’t want to speak on behalf of Penelope and Ginny, but I’m going to – they write so brilliantly.

“With a rapidity and turn around like you wouldn’t believe.

“Like, if there was an issue with a scene we weren’t quite sure about they had suggestions and rewrites all the way through shooting.

“But the speed and brilliance with which they can turn things around is incredible.”

Pack of Lies is the Skinner sisters’ first breakthrough as creators after writing several episodes of Fresh Meat.

If the drama is successful after its release this week, Rob and Alice could return for more games of cat and mouse sooner rather than later.

“So, I’m going to say, on their behalf, they’re ready to write, we’re ready to act!” Petrie continued.

“We just need the BBC to say yes!”

“And you!” lead actress Staton chimed in. “We need you!”

“Yes, we need a happy, healthy viewership and the BBC to say yes,” Petrie added. “So, we’ll all stand up and look at Lindsay [Bradbury, Commissioning Editor].

“We’d love to do more because also it was such a happy experience.

“To get the band back together would be an unbelievable privilege so… thank you BBC, we’re going again!”

Despite Petrie’s confidence, the series hasn’t been officially renewed for a second instalment just yet – but hopefully BBC viewers come through this week.

The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies continues Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One. The full series is available on iPlayer.
